Topic 1 concerns the city of Ithaca, New York hosting the country’s first supervised heroin injection facility. Ithaca Mayor Svante Myrick wants to create an environment where addicts can inject heroin safely without the fear of being arrested. Physicians or nurses would be available to administer antidote in the case of overdoses and addicts could also get clean syringes at the facility. Also quoted in the story is Vancouver Coastal Health Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Patricia Daly and Brown University Epidemiologist Brandon D.L. Marshall.
Topic 2 concerns a recent nationwide effort to equip law enforcement officers with naloxone hydrochloride (a.k.a. Narcan) in order to reverse the effects of opiates. Nearly 120 Americans die daily due to drug overdose and naloxone is an opioid antagonist. Modes of administering are intranasally (IN), intramuscular (IM) and an auto-injector product called EVZIO®. Quoted in the article is Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf.
Topic 3 concerns the Pennsylvania State Police Academy where 29 out of 98 cadets have been dismissed or resigned due to an ongoing cheating scandal. Quoted in the story is Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Tyree Blocker.
