LEO Round Table (law enforcement talk show)
Season 5, Episode 13b (1,145) filmed on 03/30/2020
Topic 1 concerns a question from subscriber Jesus “Jess” Linn: Does the threat of the coronavirus justify the use of deadly force?
Host Chip DeBlock’s written response is below, but listen to the other panelists on this episode:
Chip DeBlock: “My answer would be NO unless you have an underlying condition that places you in probability of a life threatening condition. Here’s why:
The World Health Organization (WHO) has the global mortality rate for COVID-19 at 3.4% while the seasonal flu is less than 1%. However, in the U.S. the current mortality rate is less than 1.7% (115,986 cases and 1,935 deaths). So in the U.S. you only have a slightly higher chance of dying from exposure to COVID-19 than the flu (less than 1.7% vs less than 1%). You can’t use deadly force against someone for intentionally giving you the flu. Now, if my 86 year old mother had someone trying to intentionally contaminate her with COVID-19 which could easily be considered a death sentence for her, her use of deadly force to prevent that person for doing so (in my opinion) would be justified.”
Topic 2 concerns Walmart shopper Cody Lee Pfister in Warrenton, Missouri being charged with a terrorist threat in the second degree after he posted a Snapchat video of himself licking sticks of deodorant with the caption “Who’s scared of coronavirus?”.
Topic 3 concerns grocery store shopper Margaret Cirko intentionally contaminating meat, produce and other items at Gerrity’s Supermarket in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania before she was charged with terroristic threats, threats to use a biological agent and other charges. Store co-owner Joe Fasula is referenced in the story.
