The assailant, a Muslim man who claims to have done the act in the name of Islam, fired 13 shots that hit Off. Hartnett 3 times in his left arm. Officer Hartnett was able to chase and shoot his attacker who was subsequently arrested. The firearm used to shoot Off. Hartnett was stolen in 2013 from another police officer. Police Commissioner Richard Ross, Off. Christine O’Brien and Mayor Jim Kenney were quoted in the story.
Topic 2 concerns the attempted armed robbery of a retired Fresno County (California) sheriff’s deputy who open fired on one of the suspects. The deputy is not named, but the robbers were Jeremy Lynd and his accomplice Bobbie-Sue Alexandra Nicole Sevier. After Lynd shocked the victim with a stun gun in his neck and lower back while demanding money, the retired deputy retrieved a pistol from his car. When accomplice Sevier rammed the victim’s car with her vehicle and attempted to hit him, the retired deputy fired 4 shots at her vehicle and struck her in the leg. She was hospitalized and later booked on charges of attempted robbery, assault, carjacking and other crimes. Lynd is still on the run. Topic 3 concerns the absence of “qualified immunity” or “sovereign immunity” in the existing language of the proposed Florida “Open Carry” legislation (SB 300 / HB 163) sponsored by Senator Don Gaetz and Representative Matt Gaetz. The Florida Police Chiefs Association has pledged to support this legislation if changes are made to protect law enforcement. Quoted in the story are Florida Police Chiefs Association spokeswoman Sandi Poreda and Executive Director Amy Mercer.
Shout Out to Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office (Illinois) Sergeant George Depuy.

Topic 5 concerns specialist police officers who work for the Chicago Police Department at O’Hare International Airport. There are approximately 260 of them and they are not allowed to carry guns at O’Hare and Midway airports. These police officers are being told to run and hide if a gun attack takes place.
